It all began in 1887, with a man by the name
of George Hancock. Though his version of softball was played indoors,
it didn't take long for the game to move outside, onto a diamond-shaped
pitch (similar to baseball). Lewis Rober, a member of the Minnesota
fire department was behind the outdoor softball game. He thought
softball would be a great way to keep firemen in shape, while they
were waiting to attend calls.
The fundamentals of the game are the same as baseball, with similar
batting and fielding strategy, but softball is played on a much
smaller area for only seven innings. The underarm pitch also warrants
less power - so all up, it's a "softer" game all round,
making it much more accessible to kids and women (hey, some of us
girls don't like the rough stuff!).
Softball is currently played in more than 85
countries. Hugely popular with women, fast-pitch softball made its
debut as a medal sport at the Atlanta Games in '96.
